Xanthan Gum is widely used for its thickening and stabilization effect in emulsions and suspensions. Xanthan gum forms a water-based gel formation that is shear thinning and can be used in conjunction with other rheology remedies, especially Guar gum as both combine to produce the most dramatic results.

The process

Xanthan gum can be dissolved in hot or cold liquid, and many gum marks are available. The powder has a strong tendency to form lumps when soaked in water and many dispersing and hydration methods are used to try to overcome this. These vary depending on the production rate, other ingredients used, etc. but include:

  • A slight addition of powder to the vortex on the moving vessel. If the dispersed mixture continues to allow the product to pour water.
  • The product may be dissolved in a liquid-free liquid such as oil. This is then added to the watery section to allow the gum to accumulate water.

Problem with mixing Xanthan Gum

Disruption of the gums and thickening using conventional agitators can cause several problems:

  1. Agglomerates can be easily formed, even if the above steps are taken to reduce the risk. Agitators do not produce enough cuts to break these down quickly.
  2. The potential full yield is difficult to obtain using traditional methods.
  3. Many formulas contain unnecessarily high levels of gum to compensate for poor yields, which increases the cost of unripe material.
  4. Longer mixing times are required to complete dispersing / stirring of the water. This can degrade the gel.
  5. Premixing powders or water-soluble phase gum add up processing time and cost.
  6. Unhydrated gum can dehydrate slowly during storage or subsequent processing, leading to unwanted changes in product viscosity.
  7. It is not possible to create high-performance gum solutions by traditional methods. Solutions of this kind may be needed in some systems where water is limited in the formation.

Solution

The Wahal Engineer High Shear mixer can produce agglomerate-free dispersion and fully hydrate Xanthan gum in half the time taken by conventional methods. When used for mixing in a tank, Wahal Engineer Ultramix will be more suitable. Performance is as follows:

Stage 1
The vessel is charged with liquid and the mixture is started. Xanthan gum is added to water as soon as possible. The high-speed rotation of the single-piece Ultramix header creates a powerful vortex, pulling the powder and liquid down into the head.

Stage 2
The materials are then forced into the spaces near the head of the work and then reassembled back into the body of the mixture. Any agglomerates are destroyed when they pass through spaces.

Stage 3
The powerful movement in the vessel made by Ultramix ensures that in a short cycle of mixing all the material passes many times through the work head, continuously reducing the particle size and exposing the increasing area in the surrounding liquid environment. This quickly eliminates hydration.

Benefits

  • High yield/performance allows products to be made with reduced gum content, reducing the cost of raw materials.
  • Agglomerate-free mix.
  • User error successfully deleted.
  • Quick mixing times.
  • Stable product quality and duplication.
  • Mixing chewing gum with a powder or water-free phase is not required.

Wahal Engineer Flash mix

Disruption of the gums and thickening using conventional agitators can cause several problems:

  • Even when the above steps are taken agglomerates can easily build up. This can be exacerbated by the operator’s error. Agitators do not produce enough shear to quickly break down this, resulting in longer mixing times and lower yields. Many forms contain unnecessarily high levels of gum to compensate for this, which increases the cost of immature items.
  • Premixing powders or water-soluble phase gum add to processing time and cost.
  • Unhydrated gum can dehydrate slowly during storage or subsequent processing, leading to unwanted changes in product viscosity and stability.
  • It is not possible to create high-performance gum solutions by traditional methods. Solutions of this kind may be needed in some systems where water is limited in the formation.

Solution

The Wahal Engineer High Shear mixer can produce agglomerate-free dispersion and fully hydrate Guar gum in half the time taken by conventional methods. These benefits stem from the action of the mixing/cutting stage of the Wahal Engineer rotor/stator mixer /rotor-stator homogenizer . This works as follows:

  1. The vessel is charged with liquid and the mixture is started. Gum is added to the water as soon as possible. The high-speed rotation of the rotor blades creates a strong absorption of fluid and powder in the work surface where it is rapidly absorbed.
  2. Centrifugal forces drive powder and liquid in the morning the head of the work head, where they are below high shear between the gap between rotor and stator the wall. The product is forced out of the stator and propelled back to the body of the mixture.
  3. New items are drawn simultaneously to the job title. In a short mixing cycle, everything passes many times with the head of the work, gradually decreasing particle size and exposure to increased surface area in the surrounding liquid, to accelerate the flow of water.
